Melbourne's public transport problem has gone on for too long. In the morning when it is really cramped, i have the i-am-so-hot-i-feel sick-i-want-to-get off-the-train feeling, however in the afternoon although it may be hotter but i never feel sick. i drink water but i feel really hot. Why do i get so hot in the morning? Even when i take off my jumper and i am wearing shorts i feel really hot.

  1. I would guess that the MORNING commuter crowd overwhelms the air-conditioning system. But in the afternoon, on the way home from school with smaller crowds, the air-conditioning can handle cooling the car.

  2. Its unusual, as trains left to sit in sidings during the day awaiting the afternoon peak tend to 'heat soak' and be hotter.

The previous suggestion about overwhelming the air con may be possible, but is it that much more crowded in the cool of the morning?

Are you sure that you aren't pregnant?

  3. Could you be pregnant?

  4. The train has been sitting in the yard until the morning rush hour begins and it takes time to warm/cool the train body in addition to warming the air.

You naturally feel more comfortable when the seats, etc. are the same desired temp as the air is supposed to be.

For us in the NYC area, the worst time is winter in the morning on early trains. We frequently get them right out of the yards. The heat is on, but it's not intended for sudden bursts and the seats are cold.

If that weren't enough, we sometimes get a cold car where they sometimes are able to turn the heat and other times, whatever is wrong can't be fixed immediately.

We get the reverse in the summer. Except sometimes they send out cars without working air conditioning and it's called a hot car. Indeed, because these cars were built 35 years ago and don't have windows that open.

Stand in a cool car or cook yourself in buckets of sweat? That your choice.

The trouble with trains is that they're long term investments and no one in politics wants to be invovled in anything that brings long term benefits. Easier to reward your buddies with road contracts and make small towns happy.
