you can click on restore down on the right top of your screen to make it smaller

I may be way off base about your question... I hope not.  I think you're talking about your buddy list.  Mine is still relatively small.  You can adjust the size of your buddy list by going to messenger at the top then going down to show/ hide and adjusting out what you don't need.  The only thing that doesn't go away is the advertisement at the bottom.
