  1. he must meet all 4 conditions.

1.He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his team

2.He is not the winning pitcher

3.He is credited with at least ⅓ of an inning pitched

4.He satisfies one of the following conditions:

a.He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning

b.He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, at bat or on deck

c.He pitches for at least three innings

  2. Because of the stupidest scoring rule in baseball - one of the possible conditions for getting a save is "the tying runner is in the on deck circle". In 40+ years of watching I have NEVER seen someone score from the on deck circle.

Just a dumb stat that helps closers command millions of dollars in salary for rather dubious achievements. As long as Hoffman kept his ERA under 108.00 in that situation he gets a save. Pretty impressive, huh?

  3. he came in with runners on base

  4. he saved a day pitching 1/3 + innings
