How come we cannot come up with an original creature?

Every single "original" creature any artist can come up with is really just a mashed up, tweaked out version of creatures on the planet? Why can't we built from an original concept?

Umm...because my generation is lazy and has very little imagination...and how can we build a new creature out of a shape that doesn't exist???

This is true of all art forms(I consider storytelling an art form).  Movies, music, TV -- everything is just recycled, rehashed.  Sometimes I wonder if the human race has run out of imagination and it really worries me.
