Because no one really has an accent when they're singing. singing has more to do with the tone of your voice, not the way you pronounce words.

A spoken accent develops differently. British English brought over to America slowly developed into the different modern regional variations. And that happens when people speak to each other every single day.

So....British singers and American singers pronounce English the same way while singing because..... People don't sing to each other back and forth in everyday life.

when you sing, you move your voice in various tones, pitches, accent etc.... so you may sound different than u usually do.

When you sing, each phoneme (vocal sound) is under enough slow scrutiny that you can sing with purity.  However, I recently saw Sunday in the Park With George - and cracked up at each "Soon-deh!" - British lead as Dot.  Hey - we get past it.  I have seen and heard odd stuff - like an all-Norwegian looking cast in Minnesota who did Fiddler on the Roof.  My cousin (darker, ethnic Jewish look) tried out (professional AGMA artist) and was turned down because she would not MATCH the family.  She said that her real family probably CAME from the village that was burned by the Czar  . .. You get all kinds of things that show up in the arts.  When you participate, you supend all belief and rationality, to go on the ride.

I have no idea.  but some do, and I think it really depends on the song.
