How come when my cats fight/wrestle they will body slam each other then scramble back to there feet and just stare at each other intensly thumping there tails on the ground?

After a few seconds on staring, one will body slam the other, then they get back up and repeat.

Does anyone actualy know why they do this?? Its EVERY time they fight/wrestle.

It typically starts as play fighting but then it always gets serouis with hissing and growling.

  1. Sounds like they KNOW they have to LIVE together, so neither one really wants to fight but they're been pushed to the limit & MUST now fight.

The posturing & displaying fight habits are inbred into their DNA, but cats are stealthy.  They can't stalk each other much around the house, so when faced with a fight, they stare & thump tails to show they're not backing down, they're ready & waiting for the other to make the first move.

Hope you can keep them from doing too much damage to each other.

  2. When a cat thumps their tail it means they're angry. Seriously, don't worry about it.. they're animals.

  3. Hehe... I like how you describled this; it made me laugh. What they're doing is totally normal. Cats learn from playing. They learn how to stalk, pounce and attack prey by play-fighting. This is why they are "body slamming" each other to the floor. They stop for a break when they get tired. When cats get into a staring contest, they are challenging each other. If you ever have a staring contest with a cat, it will make them agitated also. So this is why their tails are flapping around in an angry manner. They are builing up the suspense, in a way.
