  1. A lot of the time when you see it on TV it is a drunk driver who hits the cop/cop's car. That is because for some reason when you are drunk you are subconsciously attracted to flashing/blinking/bright lights. This is also why a lot of drunk driving accidents are head on colisions.

  2. I don't think it's happening that much more often.  It just makes for more exciting cop reality shots.  Some people are drawn to the flashing lights, usually drunks.  It's called moth to the flame syndrome.  And some people continue to insist that it is their right to speed, no matter how much that impairs their ability to control themselves on the road.  That's why a lot of states have passed laws requiring people to either shift to the next lane or go 20 miles below the speed limit if they can't when they see a traffic stop.

  3. Next time you ar driving impaired, lets say you are on the phone or having a deep discussion with a passenger, look at a sign on the side of the road like you are interested in it. You will notice that you are steering towards the side of the road with the sign.

If you aren't paying enough attention to your driving your steering tends to follow your sight lines.

When the pretty strobe light are on you look to see what is happening and steer into the police car.

Years back the Illinois State Police had the troopers turn off the mars lights after they pulled someone over. It helped but legislatures thought it was bad and made them go back to leaving the lights on.

  4. It is actually uncommon. You read about airplane crashes too, but for as many flights as there are, these are low percentages. TV collects all the crash scenes for entertainment value.

  5. It doesn't happen that often. It's just that it looks really cool when it does, so they put it on TV.

Some people just shouldn't have licenses. If you can't see it coming, slow down, and pass with care, you shouldn't be driving. However, as long as you're a bad sober driver it's ok. Gawd forbid if you drive after having a couple of beers. You obey all the traffic laws and aren't causing any problems, yet you can lose your license at an unconstitutional check point.

Guilty until proven innocent? Nice system.
