You hear it all the time with Arod?

I am not an Arod fan by any means but wondering if there's a double standard because at one time Griffey was arguably the best player in baseball.

  1. b/c their team hasnt won 1 either, so they rip somone else

  2. Maybe it's because New York fans expect too damned much out of one player and don't consider the fact that the team's pitching during the A-Rod years has largely been lackadaisical. Junior on the other hand never really had those kind of expectations in Cincinnati, but did too a far lesser extent in Seattle. I'm of the opinion that no matter how big a jerk a player appears to be or how big their salary is, they are still not accountable for the success of the team as a whole. Since all that anyone can do is their individual best, these players should not be held accountable for the failures OR successes of their TEAM.

  3. For several reasons. First, ARod is the highest paid player in the game. That makes for higher expectations. Second, he is now on the Yankees, where he is surrounded by talent and the team is expected to win. They have made the playoffs every year he has been with them, but have not won a title. He has yet to have the kind of post season performance where he carries a team. Griffey cannot be blamed that the Reds never put together a pitching staff during his tenure with the team. And Griffey never left a team as a free agent.

  4. First of all, A-Rod is in New York. Junior has been in smaller cities such as Seattle, Cincinnati, and now a larger one, Chicago. We may here a little bit more, and in five years when it comes time to vote for him, it might make a little bit of a difference, but not much. Same with A-Rod. There have been many players to go the Hall without any rings. Ernie Banks, Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, etc. Did you know that Bob Feller never one a game in the World Series, and his teams participated in two different World Series. It won't matter in the end.

  5. More so due to Griffeys low kep style of play through out his carrer. He ahs never bitc*ed about a thing, and just went into each game, each day, trying to do his thing, which he has succcessfully done in a quiet manner. He isnt selfish, nor creates, and desires media attention. However, with his career winding down, now was the time to be traded and play for/with a team who can contend.

  6. i don't know. its like in the NBA; even tho kobe has won rings you hear criticism of him not winning one without shaq more than you do about grant hill not even getting past the first round in his career.

  7. Because Junior is every ones golden boy, he is their untouchable perfect person.  Junior did not have the biggest contract in the league and everyone wants to blame A-Rod because a couple of idiot owners offered he more money than anyone else has ever received.  I think that Griffey gets a pass on things far too often, he is always the figure that people want to bring forward as the poor unfortunate player that got put in the bad situations.  He made his bed by demanding a trade to the Reds, he was a jerk to people his whole time in Seattle but since he was the Golden Boy climbing the wall he got a pass on things!

  8. It has nothing to do with rings. I've never heard that criticism as a lot of great players have not won one. The criticism with A-Rod is his performance in the post-season, period. Like I said I have never heard of what you are asking.

  9. Griffey gets a pass because he's not the type who begs for attention.  Before his injuries there was no doubt that Junior was perhaps the greatest talent to reach the majors in decades.  That Seattle team was loaded with future HOFer's but couldn't afford the payroll.

Junior was happy just going back to his roots and not being too overly concerned about his contract.  On the other hand A-Rod was working a deal in Texas that was greater than most South American countries have in their treasures.

The money got every ones attention and caused them to believe that if he can be paid that kind of money, he dam well better be able to lead his team to, not one, but several world series championships.  That tag has followed A-Rod ever since.

  10. Rodriguez is the highest-paid player in the game playing for one of the most famous franchises in all of professional sports. Expectations are naturally higher for him than someone like Griffey, who only gets to the postseason if he buys a ticket, and he has drawn criticism because of his poor performance in the postseason. The perception is that Rodriguez is not a clutch or money player and the stats bear that out.

His BA during the regular season is .307 but just .279 in the playoffs.

He homers once every 14.2 at bats during the regular season but just every 21 at bats in the postseason.

Nis UBP and Slugging Pct. are lower in the playoffs.

He drives in a run every 4.8 at bats in regular season play and 8.6 at bats in postseason play.

The Yankees have made the playoffs in 4 straight years with Rodriguez in the lineup but they have lost in the ALCS once and the ALDS 3 times.

Until Rodriguez wins a ring he will be viewed by some as a choker. And deservedly so.

  11. Because A-Rod has always been cocky and Junior has always been humble.  The fact that Junior's father was a pro also gives him a free pass with many of the media that other guys don't get.  A-Rod plays in NYC where rings are expected every year.
