How common are black widows??

i freak with bugs and last summer there was a huge spider in my tub. it was about the size of my palm. the other day i saw that ara blah phobia movie(dont know how to spell it) but i hate bugs creatures...whatever that isnt human....in general. i just killed a spider. it had a red spot on its back. im freakn out. but its not the first one i killed. about a wk ago i killed another. plz tell me there is other kids of spiders with a red spot on their back. i knew i should have seen that movie. plz helpful answers i have three kids that can be in danger!

IN SOUTH CAROLINA, THEY ARE COMMON. THEY CAN BITE AND INVENOMATE, BUT IT COULD BE A DRY BITE. JUST TELL YOUR KIDS NOT TO PLAY WITH SPIDERS. CAN YOU MAYBE PUT A PIC ONLINE? IF YOU SEE ANOTHER ONE MAYBE?

Black widows have a red hourglass on the underside of their abdomen. Otherwise they are just a glossy black like patent leather.How common they are depends on where you live. Here in Reno they are all over in dark places. You have to be careful when you turn over boards or rocks or reach into dark cabinets.I have killed hundreds in my lifetime and never been bitten.

& the red is hourglass shaped

There are thousands of spiders in the U.S. alone, and I've seen some here in Texas that were black and red, but weren't widows. Black widows are common here in the south, but are very secretive and like dark, secluded places. Only the mature females are black with red, and by the time they reach maturity, they will already have an established home and are unlikely to be wandering through your bathroom, so I doubt it was a black widow. I've studied black widows intensely, as well having raised and bred countless numbers of them. Although they are very dangerous, they have a bad reputation, just like snakes. And just like snakes, they would rather be left alone than to mess with you.
