How common is Discover in mexico?

Question

I read on discovers website that it’s accepted in Mexico but on the wiki page it says they are pushing it in central America/Mexico. So I feel like that means its not really advailable to use. I also saw the other ask question but it was just a lot of people saying "use visa".. my discover has a larger credit limit

I just want an straight forward answer.. can I use discover in hotels? Restaurants? shops? I’m not expecting to use it every small shop in the country but if I go into a hotel/hostel or expensive restaurant or a MNC like star bucks will I be ok?

I plan to be in an around mexico city and doing some day trips outside the city to tourist spots

please dont answer if you never been to mexico before.. I know what discover.com says :P

You need to call your "Discover" institution and tell them of your intentions.

You can use your discover card at the A.T.M.s that are all over Mexico.

Most restaurants are small economic restaurants and are not accustomed to or equipped for debit or credit card transactions.

You will want to take a bank debit card with you as well and you will get your bank rate on the day of the transaction plus a usage fee for the A.T.M.s ($1.50)

Discover are not so kind when it comes to exchange rates

Some have been lost and found by "Pepe" and taken to his cousins store and maxed out.

Be sure you have the #s to cancel or notify your finacial institutions in the unlikely event they are lost.

What is "discover"?

Do you mean the Discovery channel?

Okay, I guess it is some credit or debit card (I guess on what i read here). That card ("Discover") is NOT known in México, I assume some places would accpet it, but this is not common here; actually, no-bank in México works with that.

Here the most usual cards are MasterCard and Visa, and maybe American Express (but after the others).

No way Jose.  Not in Mexico.

I travel all over Mexico and I can tell you most places do not accept that card.

Please use visa or mastercard.

American Express is not accepted in most of the restaurants and stores of Mexico due to the high commissions they charge.

Most hotels do accept American Express.

Discover is not common at all in Mexico.  The preferred credit card is VISA and Mastercard.  American Express is fine for higher end stores/resorts/restaurants.  Cash is preferred is mom/pop restaurants and is also a bargaining chip for negotiating in some markets.  Bottom line:  Discover is very uncommon.
