How common is it for people to suffer from astigmatisms?

Hi all,

Just had an eye test and found out I have Astigmatisms of

-0.50 in my dominant eye and -0.25 in my other but I don't wear glasses or contacts.

I didn't think I had any problems with my eyes as have never had any problems with my vision.

Anyone know how common it is for people to have this level of Astigmatism? I ask because i'm trying to join the Navy as a pilot and want to know if this is going to be a problem.

It is very common for most people to have some degree of astigmatism. Yours is minor and not much to worry about. People have correction for astigmatism when their cornea isn't perfectly spherical. It all has to do with the shape of your eye. It seems weird to me when a patient brings in a prescription that has no correction for astigmatism, because it doesn't happen very often. Don't worry about your eyesight, a minute correction like your won't hinder your desire to be in the Navy. Good Luck!

why do you use the word "suffer"?

are you in any pain?

astigmatisms just means the your eye is more football shaped

I don't know how common it is, but you won't be able to be a pilot without perfect vision. Sorry dude. I'm positive about this!  They turned my friend down for the EXACT same reason.  He had just -0.25 in one eye and the other one was fine and he still got turned away because of it.

well i knew a girl who had it ...it aint a big deal though you have to learn how to control it if you have it as a girl i knew had it in where her eye would just shake for less than a second like you can just lose a bit focus for less than a second but nah like if your doctor said your ok then your ok...i mean im sure you asked him and if he said yeah then your fine..it wont be a problem

If your vision is fine don't worry about it.  Nearly everyone has some degree of astigmatism.
