The four-leaflet clover is an uncommon variation of the common three-leaf clover. According to superstition, such leaves bring good luck to their finders, especially if found accidentally.

Clovers can have more than four leaflets. The most leaflets ever recorded is eighteen.

Many believe that these are "four leaved" clovers which is not true as these are the "leaflets" and not "leaves"; usually clovers have 3 leaflets.

According to legend, each leaflet represents something: the first is for hope, the second is for faith, the third is for love, and the fourth is for luck.[3] Legend also holds that if a lady hangs a four-leaf clover on her door, the next man to come in will become her husband.

It is debated whether the fourth leaflet is caused genetically or environmentally.Its rarity suggests a possible recessive gene appearing at a low frequency. Alternatively, four-leaf clovers could be caused by somatic mutation or a developmental error of environmental causes. They could also be caused by the interaction of several genes that happen to segregate in the individual plant. It is possible all four explanations could apply to individual cases.

You have to be lucky to find one!

When I've found them they are usually ones right at the end of the runner and some plants throw them more than others.

Where I worked we had some waste ground which was very 4-leaved clover productive till the Council tarmaced it over for a car park.

If you do find one, seal it between two pieces of Sellotape and it will keep forever with the air excluded.

lets just say the fact that we call it a four leaf clover speaks volumes !

were they at all common we would refer to them as simply clovers .... it would seem that the luck associated with the finding of a  four leaf clover is in the rarity of the happening !

now to find Freks in the haystack .... that would be lucky indeed !

The four leaf clover is a universally accepted symbol of good luck with its origin ages old. According to legend, Eve carried a four leaf clover from the Garden of Eden.

Druids held the 4 leaf clover in high esteem and considered them a sign of luck. In 1620, Sir John Melton wrote: "If a man walking in the fields find any four-leaved grass, he shall in a small while after find some good thing.

The mystique of the four leaf clover continues today, since finding a real four leaf clover is still a rare occurrence and omen of good luck.
