Question:

How contagious is PARVO???

I am 25. And I am house sitting for a sibling who owns a tiny dog (10-15 lbs) . . . . I am watching her because she is pregnant, due in about a week, and she is not able to get her parvo shot until she has them.

The dog has left her own home, because there is a lab pup who has parvo and is currently being treated for it. Its towards the end of treatment and the pup is doing great, however, we were told we can't bring the other one back because the little dog will catch it ASAP?

SUMMARY: The pregnant dog will have her shots in about a week (after the new pups arrive) and then supposedly after all her parvo shots she can go back home.

I guess the parvo is in the dirt etc?

Thanks I am clueless about animals! Just trying to help the family and speed the process along : )

  1. Your sibling should be way more responsible than that. Parvo is extremely contagious and its possible this pregnant dog could have it and possibly pass it onto the pups.

what a very sad situation. some people do not deserve their pets. i would take her into the vet and maybe you could save the pups.

    good luck

  2. Parvo is very contagious, all exposed animals need treatment or evaluation by a vet.

  3. Parvo is very contagious, especially for animals with weak immune systems (old, sick, pregnant or young).

It's basically a very bad cough that weakens the dog further and makes it more likely that the dog will get sick from something else.

  4. You might want to have your sibling talk to the vet.  Has this dog ever been vaccinated against parvo?  If so how long is she overdue?  If not, I won't go there.  Parvo is passed mostly through the f***s however it can also be passed through the vomit and other body fluids.  So you will need to make sure that anyone that touches the sick puppy has washed up thoroughly especially those that have been involved in the care and clean up.  I would also be worried about the puppies as they will not be protected since the mother is not up on her vaccinations or has never had them.  If the mom has had vaccinations then the puppies may receive some protection through the colostrum within the first 24 hours after birth.  If she has never been vaccinated than the puppies will receive NO protection from the colostrum.  The other thing that you need to know is although the lab puppy appears to be over the worst of the disease, he will still be shedding the virus for up to six months through the f***s.  This means that the pup is still contagious to other unprotected dogs and puppies.  A 10% bleach solution will kill parvo.  Sounds like there is going to be some cleaning and quarentining going in order to protect the mother dog and her puppies.

  5. Parvo" is a word most puppy owners learn, and learn to dread. It's short for canine parvovirus, the most common infectious dog disease in the U.S.

Even though it's a relatively new disease in the dog world, parvo's ubiquitous--present at significant levels in every environment, from home to kennel to park. In fact, trying to shield a puppy from exposure is considered completely futile in this day and age. It's a ridiculously tough virus that can survive for months on living things, and even on objects such as furniture, toys, and carpets.

It's a serious infection, too: it can kill in a matter of days, and it's 80 percent fatal. Puppies less than six months old and older dogs are the most vulnerable. Luckily, a simple vaccine is all it takes to prevent this horrible disease.  For more interesting read on the subject, here's alink

  6. parvo is ver very contagious to other dogs

  7. Very very contagious! You have to disnfct EVERYTHING to make sure no other dogs get it. And unfourtantly most the time it is fatal. You guys were lucky enough to have a parvo survivor because most dont. Owners put thousands of dollars into treating hoping for a good outcome but sadly most dont make it.

Just make sure those puppies are watched vry carefully because puppies ans older dogs are most sucepetible to it hecause their immune systems are not as strong as lets say a 3 or 4 year old dog.

Just be careful with those pups. I had a neighbor who had 2 dogs one 5 yr old lab and a 6 month old boxer. The pup came down with parvo (had all its shots) the older dog didnt catch it and sadly the boxerbpassed away. The owners were irresponsible and didnt disinfec everything good enough and got 3 pit bull puppies ( all at differnt times) but each one of them caught parvo and passed away from it. So over a year they lost 4 puppies to parvo. Please be careful and thank god your dog is a survivor.

good luck and best of wishes.

  8. parvo is extremely contagious and will stay on the premises for 2 yrs unless the whole area is disenfected really really good. look under www.petedge.com under home and kennel there is a really great disenfectant it comes in gal containers i highly recommend it i had a parvo case in my kennel once from someone that brought an infected dog to my premises and wiped out my whole litter after i purchased the product i never again had a  parvo outbreak.

  9. I would say , on a scale of , oh 1-10, 10 being most contagious, parvo is , oh, like a 50. I hope that makes it clear enough. It is the most painful, horrible diseases that a dog can acquire. The survival rate is extremely low, and, the only treatment that I know of , is intravenous fluids. You need to see a real vet asap, if not sooner. PLEASE, I used to breed huskies; I lost a beautiful little boy, the vet gave all 8 of my puppies a bad vaccination ( Parvo vaccine is a live virus) Good luck

  10. I agree with singlewoman.  I would call the vet and find out when  she was vaccinated.  Also ask the vet what precautions would be good.  Bleach now has lye in it, so you want to make sure  the puppies' area is rinsed well and dry.  Perhaps the vet can reccommend a good disinfectant as well.  I  would also encourage you not wean the puppies for as long  as you can (8 weeks or so... not months) so they continue to get Mom's antibodies through the milk.   Just my thoughts.  Good Luck

  11. Parvo is bad. They need to bleach and bleach and bleach all they can in and around the house. I wouldn't have the mother dog or puppies back on that property for 6 months at least. The pups will probably get it since they are vaccinated.

  12. EXTREMELY

My friends dog contracted parvo and he died  they were told by their vet that they were not allowed to have another dog on their property for at least the next two years.
