How cool are dolphins?

They are so cool!  We've recently vacationed in Cabo San Lucas and took a fishing boat way out into the ocean.  There we encountered a pod of dolphins which encircled our boat and rode the waves along side us.  Then they found a school of fish and did that cool circle attack thing they do.  It was incredible!  I'll never forget that.

In general, pretty freakin' cool.  However male dolphins have a habit of liking to "explore" things with their genitals.  There have been many reports of people being injured by overly curious dolphins.  Like everything else large in the water I try to give them their space.

Not a story I would like to have to share with my friends.  "Why are you walking funny?"  "I got poked in the rear by a dolphin!" EEWWW!!!

They're cool to watch when they catch a wave, but wild dolphins can be dangerous.  In one of the recent issues of surfer magazine, there's a true story of a guy that got literally jumped by a pod of dolphins.  One jumped out of the water and landed straight on his back.  They continued to jab his ribs as well with their noses.  Another surfer helped him get back to shore I believe.  The guy had fractured vertebrae but was able to walk after recovery.

But there's also the other side where they fight off sharks.

Just remember, the wild ones aren't Flipper.  Go to Sea World to see the friendly ones.
