How coud a band gain popularity and get discovered?

submit your stuff to a small radio station, and see what they think. contact the program director and ask for a live read.

The Internet is a good tool to advertise your band, you can get your music out to the world.   Another idea is a really good book called "This Business of Music," check it out, your local reference librarian can find it and it's available at Barnes and Noble as well as Borders (or Amazon as a last resort).

But, don't forget to practise ;)
