I've always wanted to be a journalist. But my high school doesn't have a newspaper. Should I start one? How can I get experience? Can I be a journalist without being on the high school paper?

  1. See if you can start a paper at your school.  Or try and work/volunteer for your local town paper.  I am sure they do news on the high school sports and stuff and that will give you great experience.

  2. Go to your local newspaper office (daily or weekly) and ask if they'd consider hiring you as a "stringer."  This is a person who is not actually employed by them, but writes occasional articles when they're assigned.  Offer to do an article for free to see if they like it.  If they do, you'll get more and better assignments.  When you get to college, go to the student newspaper office and sign up.
