Question:

How could I get $27,000 for college?

I start college in the fall of 2009 and I want to go to John Carroll University in Cleveland. I would like to stay on campus for the experience, but I don't think I could get the extra $7,000 it would cost, so this is just the tuition for my first year. Most of the scholarships they have, I don't qualify for because you have to be directly related to a gradute or live in a certain area. My mom has no money saved up for me and working would be out because I would only be 17 and I'd want to go to school full-time and there's no way I could even put a dent in those payments on $6 minimum wage part-time.

Aside from FAFSA and need based aid (and FastWeb) what are my options?

  1. There are plenty of other scholarships you could surely apply for, especially if you're in need and any type of minority. Other than that, yes apply for FAFSA and calculate how much you would potentially gain back from any grants or scholarships you get. If it's not enough you can always take out student loans in the meantime. If it becomes too outrageous, you may want to consider another school that may be more affordable and less damaging to your credit.

  2. Grants from the state not FAFSAs Pell Grant, you usually have to file for FAFSA before the states grants, they are usually good too you can get up to $9000 in most states.

  3. Try exhausting all your options with scholarships. If you really can't come up with sufficient funds, you may have to take a student loan (you may need a co-signer to do so). Of course, ideally, you want to avoid getting into debt so you really have to work hard on your scholarship applications.

If you can contact your high school guidance counselor, do so. Your guidance should have an idea of what type of scholarships you should look for in FastWeb (or any other scholarship website) since your counselor will at least have access to your academic and extra-curricular achievements during your stay in high school.

One other thing, what major are you taking? Some scholarships are awarded only to students taking up specific majors. Hence, there are Art scholarships, Engineering scholarships, etc. Check whether there are scholarships offered for your desired major. Competition for these scholarships are more limited so take advantage of that.

If you want other scholarship search websites and access to other databases, you may want to check this site:

  4. You can try to go to

    Good luck
