Well, if I knew what it was that you were promoting I could better answer your question. But for the most part, in life as well as here in the virtual realm, it's all about positioning. It's where and how you position yourself and your product. Really, it's that simple. If you are only positioned on ebay who would know that? Use message boards, yahoo search marketing, pay per click, etc. to promote your product and to allow others to know that on "ebay" is where you and your product are positioned. Hopefully you have a product line that is essential to the public, but for the most part it's all about positioning. When you are needed, you'll be found. START POSITIONING YOURSELF! Think about this, if I had pigs for sale and the only ones who knew about it were just the people I was associated with, like my family, friends, household, and hometown I'd better hope that they want pigs on a regular basis. But if I were to post a few flyers here and there, town to town, state to state then I sure my sales would increase. Because why? Because I've positioned myself in a way for people to take advantage of what I have to offer. Hey, it works for me. Good luck...

Find your niche.  Make sure you take advantage of every opportunity to use key words (that people will likely use to find products like yours) in your listing titles and descriptions (and your eBay store if you have one).  Check the competition on eBay for the products you're selling, make sure your pricing and descriptions are better than the competitors'.  Set up items on auction, start the bidding at 99 cents (or even at 1 cent) whenever you can to attract attention.  Make sure you describe your products accurately and take great pictures of them to be posted with your listings.  Cross-sell other items you have for sale when a buyer bids on one of your items - - offer combined shipping whenever possible.  There's SO much more...
