Instructions would be amazing, but all I really need to know is skills should I learn to make a hat like that. I've just started knitting, and to make a hat like that is my long-term goal. Thank you very much!

  1. You can use Google to find knitting patterns (free) for beanies and similar hats.  Sew on the ears.  Knit two triangles for the ears.

If you're starting, what you'll need to learn for things like this would include

learning to read the abbreviations on a knitting pattern

    casting on

    casting off

    knitting

    purling

    increasing

    decreasing

    sewing a knit item together

You'll also need to learn how to count out your own pattern so you can make the ears reasonably well.

I'm sure you're already aware the hat in the photo (very cute) is made of black fleece and was sewn on a machine.  If your knitting isn't really tight for the ears, you'll want to make two layers and put some kind of stiff interfacing in between, and then sew up the outside edges.

Yarn manufacturers' websites often have good patterns.  Check out www.coatsandclark.com and www.lionbrand.com to see what they have.  They have knitting helps, too.  Yarn manufacturers have a vested interest in your wanting to learn to knit and keep knitting -- so you'll buy more yarn.  The sites are free, though, whether you buy their yarn or not.

  2. Go here and click on the top left hand side for Learn to knit.  It has illustrations and the has a pattern finder for knitted patterns.  you might find the pattern there you are looking for.

Good luck with learn how to knit.

  3. Well, to make a hat like that, it almost looks easier just to sew it with felt, but I guess you could convert any knitted hat pattern into it. If you've just started knitting, I suggest not taking on a hat quite yet. I started knitting when I was about 12 (I'm fifteen now) and certain hat patterns are still difficult for me. For a lot of hats you, have to use circular knitting needles (I've never tried using those) but the hats that I've made I found a pattern that allows you to use regular needles. All you really have to do to make the ears for the hat would be knit two triangles, fold them in half and sew them on. I'd check out some of the knitting books at your local library and see if there's a hat pattern that doesn't have any cables or extra 'fluff' or possibly you could kind of mesh two patterns together to try to get the look you want. Just keep practicing the knitting and good luck!
