My fiance and I are getting married in two weeks and would like to live in Okinawa Japan. She is a Japanese citizen and her green card expires next year but we really want to live in Okinawa. I am American. I recently joined the Navy and leave for boot camp in 4 months and will be an Aviation Mechanic. If possible, could you tell me the steps we need to take in order to make this move?? I appreciate your time and answer!!! Thanks

  1. I believe there are naval personnel on Okinawa.  Try to get assigned there.

  2. Renew her green card no matter what, get citizenship if you can. This way you don't have to worry about renewing the green card and can go back and forth between both of your countries without worry. You never know if something might happen and you need to stay for an extended period due to family illness, etc.

#2 if you can't get stationed in Okinawa (the Air Force and Marines are huge there, not Navy), then the only way you can live in Okinawa is when you're out of the service. Then you want to get the Japanese version of a green card and your wife can help you with that. It would help a lot if you learn some Japanese so you are not completely silent at interviews and can answer on your own, especially if later you want to get Japanese citizenship. If you want to live in Okinawa indefinitely, you will need a visa or citizenship.
