I have had to buy a new trumpet (silver bach) because some dummie smashed my trumpet into tin foil while i wasnt in the instrument room at the high school. My case as no lock on it and I have no money to buy a new case with a lock. If worst comes to worst im going to have to bolt two ( o ) shaped bolts from the hardware store, and that is going to look horrible. PLEASE HELP!!!

  1. no they sell the case locks.

its a latch with a key that goes to it.

    its made by trophy.

    check their site or ebay.

    good luck:)

  2.      drill a hole on each side by the opening, then put a lock through the holes. A combination lock or a key lock.

  3. First, I hope that you have contacted your insurer!  The trumpet might be covered under a homeowner's policy.  I suggest that any replacement trumpet be specially insured under the homeowner's policy as a "scheduled item".

Second, I hope you have raised bloody h**l with the high school music teacher and with the school administration and the school board!  Schools are supposed to have certified personnel physically present and directly supervising anytime students are present.  There should be special lockers to store instruments inside the band room -- with locks!  If nothing else, I'm willing to bet that if you raise enough h**l that NOBODY will go near your new trumpet!

It is, unfortunately, possible that your trumpet was trashed by vandalism rather than simple carelessness, and that is a crime.  Report it to the police and to your local State's Attorney or District Attorney.  Further, I urge you to let it be well-known that you have done so, and that you intend to prosecute.

Additionally, you very probably have grounds for a private lawsuit for monetary damages as well.  You might have a chat with your family attorney, too.

As to a new case with a lock, I think you have very good grounds to insist that the school district purchase it for you!  They have insurance, and even if it doesn't cover the price of a new Bach, they should make the good faith gesture of providing a case to keep your property safe on school property, whether by a locker with lock or with case with lock.

Now, as to your current problem of keeping your trumpet out of the hands of idiots - - - I suggest you go to a shop that sells bicycles and get a very good bike lock cable wrapped in good plastic and wrap it around the case and through the handle as many times as necessary to be fairly snug, and then lock it by adding your own padlock. I used to do that with my bassoon since the locks on the case were worthless.  (I suspect that locks on trumpet cases aren't any better.)

    Good luck!
