Question:

How could I make sure my cat's litter doesn't smell in a small apartment, and which breed is best?

I live in a small apartment, and I'd like either a tabby or a black cat (male). Which breed is most playful, and yet would cope best with the limited space? I would also like to know what I could do so that my cat's litterbox would not smell.

  1. Not  sure  about  the  smell. But  the  breed  I  that  is  Fresh step  for

    litter.

  2. I had pretty bad litter box odors and then I read a review about a product called fridge it activated carbon odor absorbers.  So, I gave it a try and it really works great.  Took care of the odor completely and totally unscented which I (and my cats) like.   You can get from Innofresh.com

  3. Hi we have 2 kittens and live in a small apartment, I would suggest a cat loo, it has a filter in the top to take care of unwanted smells.Clean it out everyday (p**p) and change at least every 4 days. Remember male cats do stink so get it neutered. If you are feeling really adventurous try and train it to go on the conventional loo. One I have heard of done it with an old salad bowl, havent tried it myself but seemingly it works. Good luck.

  4. I use a small box of Armon hammer and it kills the odor for at least a week. Also clean it every four days or so.

  5. I think it's best not to go to a shelter with a preference in color. Just walk past the cages and greet all the kitties until one just seems perfect for you. You'll just know.

My cat's litter box is covered, which I hear smells worse because it holds all the stink in, but I just can't stand to look at it all the time. I clean it every couple of weeks and use Scoop Away. However, I am going to start using Fresh Step soon because it also clumps and you can earn points from buying it and redeem them for stuff. As much litter as I use, I should get something out of it right?

I just got a year-old cat today to be a mother figure and playmate for my 3 month old, and she seems to be a siamese mix. Despite her age, she is quite playful. My three month old is more interested in chewing on me and his toys than playing with them.

For the smell: baking soda. Lots. It's cheap, so pour it on.

For hiding the litter box: there are several ways. You can go to this site and get some ideas for hiding it using items from Ikea, but you can get stuff like that anywhere... http://ikeahacker.blogspot.com/search/la...

  6. Instead of using nasty clay litter like most people do, use wood pellets. You can buy them in pet stores (Feline Pine, etc.), but it is much cheaper to buy pellet fuel.

Buy or make a sifting litter box like these:

The litter is completely safe to flush, so you can just scoop and flush p**p as needed. The box will always stay clean because the urine collects with sawdust in a separate container. You can dump the urine and sawdust as often as you like. I do it weekly.

  7. I would suggest scooping the p**p from the litter about twice a day. Change all the litter about every 3 to 4 days. You may need to change it sooner depending on how much waste the cat produces. Also if you are getting a male make sure you get him neutered before 6 months of age. A male unneutered cats urine has a very strong odor. If you don't believe me, see for yourself. It is enough to make your eyes water.
