  1. I think there were a real lot of them when they started out.

    Then they got lost ...obviously.

  2. BIG canoes and skilful seafarers.   We are not talking a 2 man sea kayak here.  The canoes were twin hulled and up to 40 metres long.

The same people colonised all of the Pacific islands.

  3. Two expeditions have proved that it was entirely possible for ancient civilisations to cross oceans using the simple boatbuilding technology they had at the time.

In 1947 Thor Heyerdahl and his team sailed a raft called the Kon Tiki across the Pacific Ocean from Peru to the Polynesian Islands.   The raft was constructed according to traditional Peruvian designs and was made from reeds.

In 2006, another Norwegian team tried to duplicate the results from the 1947 expedition only this time sailing a raft designed in the traditional New Zealand Maori way.   They successfully sailed the "Tangaroa" across the Pacific in a similar route also from Peru to French Polynesia using even more accurate ancient building methods than the original expedition.   They proved you could sail traditional seafaring craft through all kinds of ocean conditions and complete the journey,

  4. Scientists have studied the physiology of Polynesians and discovered that they have a very efficient way of processing fat. Only a small amount gives a tremendous amount of energy. Aided by this, it enabled long voyages in their large canoes.

The downside is that they now have a big problem with obesity.

I don't think sea sickness is an issue if you spend your entire life in boats.

    Oh, and it's spelled "Maoris"
