  1. well many of these channels are gated.That is either a voltage , or ligand cause the channel to be open or closed. For instance the long Ca+2 channels in the heart are opened under the influence of cyclic AMP..so that as the drenaline rises it activates adenylyl cyclase which produces cAMP which through its activated kinase phosphorylates certain amino acids in the channel that opens it...so the channel is regulated by specific factors that open or close it.
