How could a vaccuum be created on earth?

Originally I thought that if the ozone layer went, a vacuum would be created, but someone said that wouldn't happen, because the atmosphere would stay.

If so, how could the atmosphere go?

  1. Vacuums are created on earth every day in factories and laboratories and are used for various purposes such as making medicines or freeze drying foods. But the intent of your question concerned the atmosphere. Your original thought that if the ozone layer were to disappear a vacuum would be created is simply wrong. The atmosphere could be ripped away from the earth by a glancing blow from a passing asteroid. Such an occurrence happened on Mars some 250,000 years ago. It ripped away the atmosphere and most of the water on Mars.
