  1. keep guests to just immediate family.  Make everything yourself.  Quality, not quanity is the key.  When my sister got married, she had a barbarque instead of a reception, and people volunteered to bring food.  We went to a Metropark (public beach) instead of a fancy hall.  And we made all the decorations and invitations ourselves.  Check out the bookstores too.  There are tons of books on how to have cheap weddings.  Plan to spend at least 2 hours in the bookstore flipping through the books to find the one or two that will work best for you.  And go on-line too!!  Theknot.com has tons of stuff.

  2. Well, I had a nice church wedding with about 150 guests, 3 bridesmaids, 3 groomsmen for under $5000 ($1000 just for the dress).  My family pitched in a lot and (family) friends volunteered for things like the reception, cooking, decorating, etc.  The church was free because I transferred my membership there.  I got my cousin's friend's mom to do the photography.  She is a photographer, but has only recently started doing weddings.  I did all the invitations and programs myself (they turned out quite nice!).  It's do-able if you have support.  Good luck!  Also, my bridesmaids paid for their own dresses.
