  1. First you will need to decide whether your business is a sole trader, Partnership or a Company.

Sole Trader - One Owner, Owner Keeps all Profits.

Partnership - 2-20 Owners, Profits Shared.

Company - Owned By Shareholders, Run By Directors.

Seeing as you are hoping to start your own business I would advise Sole Trader for you.

First Let People Know What The Business Does, Come Up With A Good Name, Slogan & advertise (Going Door to Door, Handing out Flyers & etc.)

Before you start investing I would advise that you do some market research first and see who you're customers are going to be and how much you are going to charge & etc.

Your Profits will need to Cover:

Fixed Costs - Rent, Electricity, Petrol, Gas & etc.

Variable Costs - The Cost of Making the product, however, as your business would be a service, it would be labour intensive so your main variable cost would be wages.

Profit CONTRIBUTES to making the costs of the firm.

Contribution Per Unit = Price - Variable Cost.

Each Contribution goes towards meeting the Fixed Costs of the firm.

    E.g.

    £200 Price

    £150 Variable Costs

    £10,000 Fixed Costs.

    Contribution per unit = £200 - £150 = £50.

    £10,000 Divided by £50 = 2000.

So you will need to cut 2000 Lawns to cover the fixed costs.

You will need to prepare a set of accounts when in business.

    Trading Profit & Loss Account

    Balance Sheet

    Cash Budget

    Manufacturing Account

    Ratios

    Ledger Accounts

    Break Even Analysis.

Every Firm has it's Assets, Assets can be tooken in by bayliffs if the firm goes into Liquidation (goes Bankrupt).

    Fixed Assets

    Are Long Term Tangible Items.

    e.g. Property, Land, Machinery, Vehicles,

However there is a Intangible asset called Goodwill.

    Current Assets

    Are short term assets.

    e.g. Stock from year before.

    Bank Balance

    Debtors

    Prepaid Expenses

    Cash

The Lawnmower will go into Fixed Assets and go under Machinery.

If you are just wanting to do a expand a bit and not actually form a business, just do more lawns then yeah buy a lawn mower go for it. But you will still have to set your price by thinking of Variable Costs, that will include Petrol & Gas.

But Anyway, Good Luck To You and I Hope It Goes Well.

  2. Your best bet would be to skip the lawn moving business and try the lawn mowing business.  Moving lawn is not something you would find a lot of customers.

  3. NO ELECTRIC LAWNMOWER!!!! Buy a gas one, or if one of those old manual mowers if you're that much of an enviromentalist nut.

And you should print out a bunch of flyers and put them in people's mail boxes. That usually works.

  4. You could go door to door to save costs on flyers and you could have your grandma give you referrals.  Having an electric lawn mower would be more preferably to people because of the whole oil crisis.  I have an electric mower myself but the only downside is that there's a electrical cord that you have to drag around.

  5. door to door is a good way, however you may want to wait to start a  lawn mowing business. The way the economy is right now people just don't want to pay for things like this. especially when it's something they can do their self.

  6. be cheap work hard and dont use gas
