i want to volunteer so it could go on my high school record thing. i live in queens, nyc.

The best place to see a lot of opportunities in one place is nycares.org.  

Also, there is a great organization called God's Love We Deliver, which delivers meals to people homebound by AIDS and other illnesses.  You volunteer and go in and help in the kitchen.  I did it with a group from work and we chopped carrots and celery for a couple hours.  It was actually really fun!
