  1. it's not damaging.   Humans have been using wood for fuel and building materials for thousands of years.  Nothing that's going to destroy the planet.

  2. By using the most environmentally 'friendly' techniques possible in the cutting, harvesting, recovery, & processing processes.Avoid the most damaging impacts of erosion, etc by practicing sound controls & restoration..

By working 'smart' with nature you can actually 'reduce' expenses, and with intelligent 'restoration' practices you can minimize the time between harvests, reduce fire & pestilence damage/risk, while maximizing future harvests.

If done intelligently, working within ethical & environmentally compliant friendly methods can put more in your pocket vs. a 'drunken' scorched earth policy.

  3. There are ways that are less damaging, but it costs more and the profit margin is less. Helicopter logging where they can hook the tree up to the helicopter and fly it out or horse logging , where draft horses pull the logs out instead of trucks.

  4. Just what they are presently doing. The planting of many trees more than they cut down .

  5. Damaging??? who said it was? It does "look" awful but damaging......In Maine cutting in the north woods has caused a large increase in the moose population. The moose don't think it damaging.

I believe you could call it "change" but damaging I think not.

Having lived in Maine my whole life 50+  I know Maine has been cut over 3 times in the last 300 years. We have 90%  forested land here. It grows back. Very hard to stop a forest from growing.

If forestry is done as Ack Ack suggests< which it is most areas in the US> than there are few long term problems
