I know this lady who was married to this man and found out he was HIV positive a few years after they had been married and had children. She said she went and got tested and she wasn't HIV positive. She said it was because his viral load was less than1000 or something. How in the world could someone have unprotected s*x with a hiv person for so long and not contract HIV????

  1. There are a few reasons why it is very possible that someone is HIV negative after being repeatedly exposed (unprotected sexual intercourse).

HIV does not transmit with every s*x act. There are a variety of conditions that need to be met for HIV transmission to occur. We know from years of epidemiological data on HIV transmission that there have been MANY cases where HIV did not transmit from one person to another even after years of exposure.

If the HIV+ person's viral load (the amount of virus in their blood) is lower, they are less likely to transmit the virus in their genital secretions -- they still can transmit the virus, but are less likely to do so.

It is possible that the uninfected person's immune system is such that they are genetically less likely to become HIV+ --- there are mutations that can occur in a small percentage of the population that make it harder for HIV to be able to infect human cells.

To give you an idea of how difficult it can be for HIV infection to occur.....

If a needle with KNOWN HIV+ blood is involved in a needlestick injury (eg. healthcare worker) where it pierces the skin of an uninfected person, there is only a 0.3% chance of HIV being transmitted.

HIV is a relatively hard to transmit virus. That doesn't mean people can become complacent about protecting themselves. Even someone with an undetectable viral load can still transmit HIV infection and transmission CAN occur with just one exposure.
