Question:

How could we do this?

We really want to have an outdoor picnic-style reception (we're having about 30 guests). I would love to have it in my parents' backyard. We want a true picnic feel with blankets, pillows and baskets as the "centre-pieces" filled with grapes, apples, cheese and crackers and champagne or sparkling juice. There will be three 75-year-old grandparents there, but we'll set up a table on the deck for anyone who prefers to sit at a table instead.

The problem is, my parents' yard isn't flat. It goes slightly uphill after the edge of the deck. Do you think this would be a problem? It's not steep but it's maybe a 20 degree incline. Would you want to sit on a blanket on a slight hill at a casual reception? Is this just a really bad idea to begin with?

Thanks in advance!

  1. it would be fine.  The only issue  would be drinks tipping, but you can get something like this, they work great, holds bottles, cans and cups

  2. It sounds really wonderful to me. I am with the first poster though, you should have a plan B incase its raining on the day. Congratulations.

  3. I think it's a charming idea...here is the problem: Do you have backup if it rains, or even if it rains several days before the reception.  Moisture leaking through the blankets and over-all muddy or buggy-ness could cause major problems for guests comfort.

  4. It's your day and you guys should do what you want.  Picnics are romantic and isn't that what your wedding is all about.  Maybe you could designate seating areas to groups of people so that the youngest ones can sit at the more precarious places.  The only bad thing about your idea is that you will need a back up if the weather does not cooperate. Wishes for much wedded bliss!

  5. a great idea. as the two other posters have said this is a charming and romantic reception!  [just have a backup plan in case of bad weather.]

i don't think the incline will be that much of a problem and most of the time people will be up wandering about and socializing, not just sitting down!

    happy wedding!
