  1. I'm not sure what the limitations on your problem are, but I will assume that you can measure distances along the ground, and have a protractor or other device to measure the angle between ground level and the top of the tree, and that the ground is perfectly level.

    You can start at the base of the tree, and back away from it until the angle between the top of the tree and ground level is 45degrees.

    That distance should be the height of the tree.

    I hope that's what you had in mind.
