Ok.. lets say you are kidnapped and relocated somewhere on the planet. How could you tell what hemisphere you are in? (not looking at any papers, tv, talking with people.

You are stuck in a house - things look strange... but you could be anywhere.

  1. If it is July and the weather is hot, you are in the northern hemisphere, if it is winter you are in the southern hemisphere

  2. At this time of year, morning comes early and night comes late.  In the winter, darkness comes early.

This, of course, is less and less useful as one approaches the equator.

  3. See which way the water goes down the drain!

  4. Try to look for The North Star (through the Window)...!!

  5. if it's july and snowing, you're in the southern hemisphere.  If it's hot, you're either in the desert or in the Northern Hemisphere.  If you're on the equator, you're screwed!

  6. Look at the stars?

  7. if at night I see the Big Dipper, I am in the northern hemisphere.

if at night I see the Southern Cross, I am in the southern hemisphere.

  8. Look at a compass and find which was is north.  Then check out how the sun travels across the sky.  If it goes straight over your head, you are more or less on the equator.  If it rises and sets more toward the south, you are in the northern hemisphere.  If it rises and sets more in the north, you are in the southern hemisphere.

Alternatively, assuming that you know the date, time how long there is between sunrise and sunset.  If it is summer and the day is longer than the night, you are in the north.  And vice-versa.

Finally, go to a pub.  If you are served by an Australian, you are in London.

  9. Maybe which side of the road people drive on? I don't know.
