Critical thinking and problem solving are  crucial, absolutely essential in the nursing process!   A nurse MUST be able to do an assessment of a patient and use critical thinking skills to interpret the findings of the assessment to determine if the patient is improving or deteriorating.  If deteriorating, she must be able to problem solve to determine the best course of action, how to interpret physician orders and decide when it is necessary to call the physician
