  1. Different materials have different strengths at which they grab onto electrons.  If you put dissimilar materials together, one will tend to grab electrons away from the other, generating a current.  But it's a slow process.

    If you put the two pieces in acid (like lime juice), it speeds up the process, resulting in a measurable current.  If you just stick two identical wires into a lime, you won't get a current...one has to be coated in a different material.
