How dangerous is Russia's attack on Georgia.

Question

Russia crossed the border and attacked a sovereign nation. Russia is trying to cut off the only non-Russian oil pipeline to the rest of Europe. Russia killed a lot of people. And it happened during the Olympics, and while American resources are spread thin with Afghanistan and Iraq.

Can this escalate into a major war or another "cold war" tha size of the Cuban Missile crisis?

Or was Russia justified in doing this action. Some people claim that America did the same thing in Iraq.

Ossetia is just formally Georgian. in fact it is independent, since 1992, when there was a war for independency. Since this war russian troops are situated in ossetia.(without them there will be many many blood, ossetians will not stop and georgians too).

2000 ossetians were killed last days by georgian bombing. (directed by american satellites :)  ) not by russians! It is fact, ask ossetians or look interview with them(if you find :) )

Russia is now weak and don't want cold war. But it seems like US want it in the same reasons. CNN is now absolutely not objective in estimation of situation in Ossetia.(sorry my english is not very good).

A much closer comparison would be with Germany.

Hitler invaded Czechoslavakia under the guise of protecting German citizens within the nation.  Of course that meant conquering the country to accomplish.

Here, there's a region that split from Georgia and claimed independence.  Russia supported them, but never recognized them as a nation.  They issued these non-Russians passports though, so these qualify in legal terms as Russian citizens.  They continued supporting these separatists in keeping things stirred up.

Then Georgia gave them an excuse, whether it was retaking control or merely putting down separatists and their incursions, the result is Russia's using it as carte blanch.

While it must be desirable to make an example of Georgia to the former Warsaw Pact countries that're leaning towards the west, too much destruction may backfire on Putin and only drive them to the western nations.

dude,russia is run by putin.he is x kgb chief,we have another cold war in the making.this guy is smart,rich and ruthless.the west better wake the fk up.................
