  1. Most english canals are  not much over 6 feet deep, they are fished on a regular basis. The main species of fish in these waterways are Roach rudd perch pike bream and chub.

    Hope this helps

    Happy fishing.

  2. The depth of English canals varies both between different canals and across a section of an individual canal.

The profile of the canal tends to be a deep section roughly in the middle and shallower sloping sides, often described as saucer shaped.

Canals had to be deep enough for the loaded working boats which navigated them.  The narrow canals of the midlands were used by narrow boats which when loaded might draw 42  inches but the canal was not much deeper than that!  Broader canals such as the Grand Union tended to be slightly deeper and the more commercial canals deeper still.  Additionally, the depth was greater at engineering works such as locks, aqueducts and wharves where the water would be deep right up to the edge. So the canals vary in depth from about 2ft to 20ft. For navigation, the issue tends to be the depth of water over the lock cills.

However, canals are now mainly used for pleasure and are not dredged to the original profiles. Modern leisure boats tend to have a fairly shallow draught around 24 to 30 inches.  Some canals are now difficult to navigate if the boat draws more than 2 ft!  It also depends on how much junk has been thrown into the cut!

Fishing is allowed on canals provided you have a rod license issued by the Environmental Agency as fishing without one is in fact breaking the law. You can face a fairly heavy fine if caught fishing without a rod license. These can be bought at Post Offices or on line through the Environment Agencies web site http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/sub...

You will need additional permits to fish club or commercially owned fisheries, commonly a day ticket.
