  1. ... i have never tried that so i really wouldnt know lol

  2. Depends on how long the hose is and how long you could try to suck in the air, lol. Really have never tried or thought about it!

  3. It depends on the length of hose! Seriously, though, if you are suggesting using the hose to breath through, you won't get very deep as the pressure on your lungs will increase the deeper you go and it will become impossible to draw breath eventually. I've no idea where the cut-off depth is, though, and don't know if anyone has tried it out or not.

  4. About 3 feet if you have a chest diaphragm that's super human. That's the muscle that pulls down on your lungs, allowing you to inhale. It's built to inhale at one atmosphere of pressure being exerted on the human body. That's the pressure at the surface. As soon as you start going down, the effort required to inflate your lungs increases as the ambient water pressure being exerted on you also increases. It doesn't matter if that garden hose is a foot wide pipe either. It doesn't get easier. The water pressure is trying to squeeze that air OUT of your lungs because of the pressure difference between where your lungs are and the surface, where the hose end is.

I don't recommend it, but if you absolutely need proof, have someone supervising you and give it a try in the shallow end of a pool, kneeling. You'll see, just don't try to force an inhalation too much or you might hurt yourself. A soon as you see it's impossible, give it up and head to the surface.

Divers get around this because the air we get is given to us at nearly the same pressure as the water pressure around us ( whatever depth we're at) by a device called a regulator that's fed by a tank of air compressed to 3,000 pounds per square inch.
