How deep is the ear?

I was wondering about how long is it from the opening of the ear to the ear drum? What would happen if you accidentally poked your ear drum with a q-tip?

You can rupture your eardrum with a Q-tip causing damage to your hearing and bleeding.  For safety, don't try seeing how far you can stick one in.
