How did *69 call back function become so widely understood and prevalent, but folks can't remember *82?

*69, as the way to call back numbers is so well known, and hardly ever used, but folks continue to forget/not understand the functionality of *82. What's that, you have no idea what I'm talking about? See what I mean?

*82, dialed before a phone number, unblocks your blocked number, and has no effect on the dialing of the number if you do not block your number in the first place. Hardly anyone who calls me thinks about doing this, and any blocked number to my cell phone, for instance, comes through as blocked.

Why did the whole *82 dialing function get swept under the carpet and forgotten, in the phone company's big marketing campaign?

  1. i don't know but i'm guessing it's because

    most people might not understand

    the concept at all.

  2. Unless you have the *69 service in a package, there is a per use charge.  Qwest in WA state charges 75 cents for pay per use.  Thats a lot of revenue

Why did the whole *82 dialing function get swept under the carpet??

The Telco's can't charge for that service, no revenue, no talk about.

It is all about MONEY my friend.

I trust that I have enlightened you!

  3. Because more people have enjoyed a "69" than an "82".

  4. I agree with into whoever's answer.

    MONEY and the stockholder.

    Excellent Question.

Too bad we can't expose all of their rip off tactics.

  5. i never heard of *82 either but maybe because i still don't even understand what it is even after your explanation. i don't understand about blocked numbers. why would you block a number? and how do you block a number? and if *82 unblocks a number then what good is it? i just don't understand any of that; i hear about don't accept blocked numbers or unblock your number and am clueless what it means. hey there a good question to ask on here.

as far as *69 (i just recentally found out about that too) it just rolls off the toungue its easy to remember because it sort of rhymes and maybe people remember because of the sexual assocaition to it.

  6. *69 is easier to remember I think as most people have unabashedly dirty minds

Interesting question - I guess it's up to you to educate and inform
