  1. He wanted to limit slavery to the states that already had the institution if he couldn't end it altogether.  He CLEARLY stated later that if he could save the Union without ending slavery that he would do it!

  2. You should really try reading a book on this subject since none of the answers here are correct, some are close but some are just way off.

It's a pretty complicated issue but if you're really interested in learning about it there are plenty of books on the subject.

  3. When he was running, his major focus was the North. In order to make the northern states (The Union) happy, he said he would end slavery. once the southern states found out about this they slowly started succeeding and eventually created The Confederacy. When Lincoln introduced the Emancipation Proclamation, he intended for all of the states to conform to it; however since The Confederacy believed they were no longer the same country as The Union, they did not follow it. This was the main reason that history books cite as the cause for the Civil War

  4. He wanted to phase out slavery slowly. He tried to persuade the southern states not to leave the union with several compromises. One was to phase out slavery over the next 50 years and have the US pay the slave owners for the slaves at 1860 prices. The south saw this as a threat to their livelihood, even though only 25% of the people owned slaves.

  5. It's a complicated issue. Some of it was over a balance of power in the Congress between slave and free states. Lincoln did not want slavery to exist in any new territories added to the U. S. The South felt he threatened its "peculiar institution" and the idea of states' rights. When the election results came in, South Carolina seceded, setting off the first shots of the Civil War when war ships were sent down to protect a Union Navy base at Fort Sumter, S.C. When shots were fired by the U.S. in a southern state, other states began seceding.

  6. He wanted to end slavery and the Evil South wanted to keep their slaves (even tho the rest of the industrialized world had stopped doing that decades before.)

    ???

  7. Pissed off the south because of Lincoln's policies
