  1. Alberta is named after Great Britain’s Princess Louise Caroline Alberta. She was the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, and wife of Sir John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll and the Marquess of Lorne, who served as Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883. Alberta was not yet a province when it received its name, but a district of the Northwest Territories. Lake Louise, a popular tourist spot in Alberta, is also named after the Princess.
