  1. During the Cold War, Austria and in particular Vienna was the hub of activity for Soviet/eastern and American/Europe/western spy networks and diplomacy efforts.  After the fall that role ended, but with a strong relationship with both Czechoslovakia (now Czech Rep. and Slovakia) and Hungary, they were first on the scene in terms of increased trade relationships with two of the strongest countries in the Warsaw Pact.  


  2. Austria was de-militarized as a result of the Yalta conference in 1944(not part of NATO), so was not much involved in the military contest between free world and communism.  Still, she probably celebrated the 'birth of freedom' when the Berlin Wall came down, more than anyone else.
