  1. It was probably the De medici family, but it could have been others.


  2. All artists in that day had patrons, and those people (rich) would pay for an artist to do a work (either by commission or they would let the artist do what he wanted).  Sometimes other rich people would commission a chapel for a loved one who passed away, or for a whole family in that family's name.
