Was there something in the history or evolution of bulldogs that made them so flabby and wrinkly?

  1. Well I think they were genetically that way.  Look at what the English Bulldogs were used for.  They were use for Bulls Bating.  I assume it's kind of like the purpose of Neapolitan Mastiff.  If it gets bitten in the face the attacker would get the skin and the dog can still turn and bite the attacker.

  2. I watched a tv program about the history of dogs and they said that bulldogs were bred that way to fight bulls. The wrinkles would allow them to hold on to the bull and the bull's blood would flow through the creases and not suffocate the dog.
