If in two dimensions, with the face in profile, but the eye looking straight at you. The shoulders were generally placed as if the person was looking at you, but their legs as if they were walking the same direction they were looking in.

The famous bust of Nefertiti now in the Berlin museum shows that they were capable of totally lifelike sculptures of the human face.

They weren't trying to make an image but a symbol. An icon like the stick figures we use on the um....powder room.(Europe and US use different words)
