How did England make money before the Colonies?

  1. England had a whole Empire - it was so vast the sun quite literally never set on the British Empire. And England's money came from that. The colonies were only a drop in the bucket - and not a very profitable one, at that.  


  2. Wool and linen were big industries.

    The fine ceramics of the SE of England, as well as coal, copper and tin were other natural resources. The English Channel and surrounding waters are great fishing grounds, and as the soil and climate are pretty good, farming was profitable too-you could easily grow more than enough food and sell it.

    Around the 1770's the industrial revolution was just starting, so automation meant that it was becoming a centre for mass prodution of all sorts of consumer goods.
