How did Europeans make lantern oil before the discovery of underground oil deposits?

I think they distilled oils into different types, but they couldn't have gotten them from underground. Where?

  1. Almost any oil will burn.  Romans used olive oil.  Rendered fat from animals.  Whales.  any oil


  2. i know some people used to use whale blubber, dont know if it was the europeans though

  3. whale oil was the most common but candles from animal fat were used more.

  4. well, they used oil derived from plants like rapeseed, olives, and also from some animals, that is where the whole whaling industry came into play. alot of the oil was derived from whale fat and other body parts and fluids.
