  1. The town of Flushing was first settled by Europeans in 1645 under charter of the Dutch West India Company and was named after the city of Vlissingen, in the southwestern Netherlands, the main port of the WIC.

It is said that the name Vlissingen means "salt meadow" and that the name was given as a nod to the tidal waters of Flushing Meadows. "Flushing" is the common English name of Vlissingen.[3]
