  1. Hutton's work influenced Charles Lyell, the father of modern geology,  who went on to influence Darwin, resulting in a complete worldview paradigm shift. This shift was away from a biblical creationism, young earth and catastrophism to a humanistic, evolutionary, uniformitarianism old earth belief. The majority of Christians have accepted this shift and moved away from a literal interpretation of the creation stories in Genesis. They are aware that and old earth that evolved over billions of years is not incompatible with a God who transcends time which He created. Nevertheless, there are still creationists who stubbornly cling on to a 6,000 or so years earth.
